Head Coach

Carol Melcher is in her 9th season with the Hornets where she has enjoyed overseeing the development of some very strong teams. Each season has seen at least one player advance to the MHSAA State Finals Tournment, and in 2000, the team finished 5th in the state. The 2003 team of Mike Edwards, Scott Jahnke, Ryan Sheets, Drew Slade and Marty Jeppesen were the tate Runner- Up. The Hornets finished 1st in SEC league play in 2004 and and have back-to-back-to-back Regional Championships (2003, 2004 and 2005). Each season brings new challenges and new talent unlike any previous team. The 2003 Team had two golfers selected to the All - State Honorable First Team: Mike Edwards and Scott Jahnke. The entire team earned All-State Academic status with a 3.50 GPA. The 2005 team had one player selected to the All-State Super Team, senior Marty Jeppesen.

Coach Melcher believes in promoting the student/athlete to his highest level of academic and athletic achievement. Using strategies and techniques borrowed from some of the game's greatest teachers, she strives to instill a strong work ethic and a strong sense of self-worth in each player. Each season, the coaching focus is on practicing and perfecting all aspects of the game, primarily the short game, preparing the player for competitive golf, mental toughness, and course management. For golfers who are struggling academically, Coach Melcher will set up individual tutoring sessions with a National Honor Society student, another golfer, peer, teacher, or the coach.

Coach Melcher has been teaching in Saline since 1988. She holds undergraduate degrees in Social Sciences and Vocal Music and Master's degrees in two areas of Special Education. In her free time, she enjoys golfing, reading, and singing and playing with Taylor and Nolan, her grandchildren. Coach Melcher lives in Saline with her husband, Jack Politz. They share four children, all of whom are Saline High School graduates and former members of the Saline Golf Teams.

Assistant Coach

Lisa Hopkins-McCauley is a Saline High School graduate and a former All-State golfer on one of Coach Clem Corona's teams in the mid 80s. She has been assisting Coach Melcher with the boy's teams as well as Coaches Corona and Charlie Henry with the girls' teams since 1997. Coach Hopkins is a valuable asset to the golf teams as she truly understands the components of the golf swing and is able to teach it to the players in such a way that they meet with repeated success. Her expertise helps build young players for competition at the Varsity level.

Lisa is a graduate of Arizona State University and earned her law degree at Golden State University. She maintains residences in Phoenix, Arizona, where she is a practicing attorney during the winter months, and in Saline, where she manages Brookside Golf Course during golfing weather.
