Teaching Strategies:

Summer and outside of class:
The Summer prior to the AP class, I provide students with a copy of the syllabus and expectations. By doing this, they are able to possibly look for and purchase the textbooks and also fine-tune areas in which they feel weak. This also helps students to continue using the language so there is not a huge gap between the school years.
In addition, I provide a variety of information about activities and events that students may do to use the language on my website. Such examples may include but are not limited to: concerts by upcoming Hispanic groups, festivals, and even conferences. Students are encouraged to use Spanish with each other, family members, and any other opportunity that presents itself.

Technology:
Technology is used often in AP Spanish. Students are using the internet to obtain current authentic news articles, research, and other activities. My webpage is also utilized and students use this for additional written, speaking, and listening practice. They can also use it for additional cultural information as well. Technology is used to record their speaking activities including practice tests, analysis, and even general comments on topics. For their listening practice, I use a variation of options from live speakers to CD’s to online. Computers, MP3 players, projectors, CD players, and scanners help to provide a variation of authentic language.

Speaking Strategies:
In addition to having the class conducted in Spanish, students are also provided numerous opportunities to speak in Spanish. Examples of such activities are: formal and informal presentations, debates, and mini-plays. In addition, students do various speaking activities from their textbooks.

Reading Strategies:
Students read from their textbooks, other materials such as poems or stories, the internet, magazines and journals in Spanish. They are exposed to as much authentic material as possible. Examples include: internet articles, magazines and newspapers in Spanish, and other literary examples.

Writing Strategies:
Students have numerous opportunities to develop their writing skills. One major example is writing formal essays done in class on a n appropriate topic. This is then evaluated on the pre-determined criteria and then discussed. Students keep their essays in their AP binders to help encourage and illustrate their improvement. Students will write informal letters from various prompts and even emails and optional on-line discussions. Other examples include: creating writing tasks, reactions, and dialogues.

Listening Strategies:
Listening activities are done throughout all levels of Spanish. In AP Spanish, students will be listening to various songs in Spanish and fill-in the missing words. From that, they interpret the lyrics and discuss their interpretations. Another listening activity that they do is done by listening to both long and short narratives on CD. They then answer both written and oral questions. Another listening activity is also from DVD’s of movies, interviews, and television shows in Spanish. Native guest speakers are another authentic example of what is used.
