The Course
Advanced Placement Calculus BC is a full year course (2 credits) in calculus comparable to first year calculus courses offered at most colleges and universities. The content of Calculus BC contains all topics included in Calculus AB, plus additional topics, and is designed to qualify the student for advanced placement into a course that is one semester beyond that which is granted for Calculus AB.
Prerequisites
Honors Trigonometry is required.
Advanced Math Analysis is recommended.
Philosophy
Advanced Placement Calculus BC is primarily concerned with preparing students for the Advanced Placement Examination in Mathematics BC administered in May by the College Board by developing the student's understanding of calculus and providing experiences with its methods and applications. The course emphasizes a multi-representational approach to calculus, with concepts, results and problems being expressed geometrically, numerically, analytically and verbally.
The AP Exam
In May, the College Board administers an Advanced Placement Examination in Calculus BC. Students earning qualifying scores (usually a 3 or higher) on this exam may earn advanced placement, advanced credit or both upon matriculation to college. It is expected that all students enrolled in Calculus BC will take the AP exam. To learn more about the College Board or the Advanced Placement Exam, click here.
