Calculus AB

The Course

Advanced Placement Calculus AB is a full year course (2 credits) in calculus comparable to first year calculus courses offered at most colleges and universities. Topics covered include limits and continuity, derivatives and their applications, and definite and indefinite integrals.

Prerequisites

Honors Trigonometry or Advanced Math Analysis

Philosophy

Advanced Placement Calculus AB is primarily concerned with preparing students for the Advanced Placement Examination in Mathematics AB administered in May by the College Board by developing the student's understanding of calculus and providing experiences with its methods and applications. The course emphasizes a multi-representational approach to calculus, with concepts, results and problems being expressed geometrically, numerically, analytically and verbally.

The AP Exam

In May, the College Board administers an Advanced Placement Examination in Calculus AB. Students earning qualifying scores (usually a 3 or higher) on this exam may earn advanced placement, advanced credit or both upon matriculation to college. It is expected that all students enrolled in Calculus AB will take the AP exam. To learn more about the College Board or the Advanced Placement Exam, click here.
