Literary skills, critical thinking skills, and communication skills are the focus of Literature and Society. Organized around thematic units such as Social Protest and Gender Politics, this course will offer students the opportunity to read and react to short stories, plays, poems and essays of celebrated authors whose works reflect our multi-cultural world. From The Great Gatsby to Brave New World, and Lord of The Flies, this class features a generous body of noteworthy literature. While practicing skills of creative thinking, process writing, and public address, students will find their own voices as readers, writers and thinking members of society through both group and individual work. |

Public Speaking |
| As we begin the twenty-first century, we face a technological world. Regardless of how much technology exists, we will never be able to make use of it unless we possess communication skills. In this basic public speaking course, using individual, small group, and large group activities, we will study the four areas of communication: communication basics, interpersonal communication, group communication, and public communication. Students will build their self-confidence in facing the challenges of the world beyond high school. |

Debate
|
We live in a society that gives us the right and the responsibility to make choices about how we conduct our daily lives. Learning how to debate helps us develop skilled decision-making, allowing us to create opportunites and make decisions that will lead to success. Choosing debate as a course of study does not need to be motivated by a desire to be lawyer or politician. Debate is the language of democracy, and we can all benefit by engaging in argumentative clash, reflective thinking, and guided research. Along with rounds of Lincoln-Douglas debate, we will practice cross examination debate. The spirited energy in this class empowers students to be persuasive, confident members of society. |
