EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SOLO AND ENSEMBLE, BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK.

WHEN?
Middle School: Saturday, January 31, 2009

High School: Saturday, January 17, 2009

WHEN DO I REGISTER?
Your director will pass out registration sheets in the Fall. You must register no later than NOVEMBER 4, 2008 in order to participate.

WHERE?
Livonia Franklin High School. Maps will be handed out in January.

If you want to Mapquest the school, the address is:

31000 Joy Road, Livonia, MI 48150-3916

WHEN DO I PLAY?
You will receive a time assignment in January. It is recommended that you arrive at least one hour before your performance time to warm up and find everything.

HOW DO I GET AN ACCOMPANIST?
Most students are successful in finding their own pianist to accompany them. Think of asking people you know from church, neighbors, friends, etc. If you need help, there are names and numbers of some pianists available from your child’s music teacher. Don’t wait, find one now! Some accompanists will even come in and rehearse with you during class time. Accompanists should be paid for playing for you.

HOW SHOULD I GET MUSIC?
Solos
Most soloists find their own music, or get it from their private lesson teacher. If you don’t have a solo yet, you can check the S&E Library or you can go check out what they have at Carty’s Music in Ypsilanti. If you don’t have a private lesson teacher, your child’s director must approve your solo choice. Remember, if the solo has a piano accompanist, which most do, it must be played at the festival to receive a rating.

Ensembles
Most ensembles will get their music from the S&E Library. We will take some time in class to help you find music, but you may need to come in before or after school. You’re welcome to find your own music at Carty’s or wherever, but your child’s director must approve it before you take it to the festival. You will be able to check out originals from the library to give to the judges on the day of the festival, but they all must be returned the Monday after the festival.

WHEN DO WE REHEARSE?
You will be given a little time in class to prepare your S&E music, but you will need to schedule other rehearsals to be successful. You are welcome to use the music rooms before or after school to rehearse. Many groups rehearse at one of the member’s homes in the evening, or on a weekend. DO NOT wait until the last minute to prepare your performance, start as soon as you have the music.

HOW DO I GET HELP?
You may sign up to get help from your child’s director before or after school over the next two months. We must hear every ensemble that is going to solo and ensemble, and every soloist who does not have a private lesson teacher, at least once before the festival.
