THE READER'S GUIDE TO PERIODICAL LITERATURE
The Reader's Guide To Periodical Literature is an index that contains citations
to articles in several general interest magazines. In the front of the Reader's
Guide is a list of the magazines that are indexed in the guide. To see
a list of magazines that we subscribe to, click
here. The Reader's Guide is
the "big, green book" located on the Index counter (immediately on your
right as you walk into the library). There are several hardcover books,
one for each year of our holdings, plus several softcover supplements that
index the current year.
How to use the Reader's Guide:
The Reader's Guide works much like a phonebook, that is, topics are listed alphabetically . Search for your topic and a list of articles that were published that year follows. Sometimes the Guide will also give you more keywords in a "see also" list. Keywords are especially useful not only in the Reader's Guide but for use in the card catalog and the databases.
The Reader's Guide uses abbreviations for the month (e.g. J - January, Je - June, Jl - July); the type of article (e.g. int - interview, m - monthly, w - weekly); and the contents (e.g. il - illustration, por - portrait).
When you find an article you want, fill out the magazine request slip (also on the index counter) with your name, teacher, hour, name of magazine and the date of the magazine. Hand your slip to one of the library assistants and they will retrieve the magazine from the backroom.
CIRCULATION
Magazines may be checked out over night. Be sure to stop by the circulation or reference desks to let a Library Assistant or Clerk know that you will be taking the magazine home. They will sign it out to you and give you a big envelope to keep it safe. Magazines should be returned the following day before 1st block. any magazine that is late will be assessed a $0.25 fine for each block it is late.
